SARA This Week Feb 21 – Feb 27

SARA gathers daily via on-the air nets and ragchews. We also gather virtually for the weekly SARA Eyeball QSO Party or Tech Topic Thursday session, the monthly General member, and Board meetings. Although we’d love to gather in-person, our current on-air and virtual gathering plan remains the best choice for the health and safety of all our members.

Ice-olation Station WØJH Special Event a huge success!

Ice-olation Station WØJH operations Feb 13-15 have been a huge success! 13 operators logged 1535 QSOs across 87 hours of operating. Many thanks to those who operated as WØJH from their home stations this year: WØGAF, VE3MXJ, WØOXB, KØAIF & KØVOB, KEØN, KØGW, KCØOIO, K5LB, KEØQQN & KEØQQM, KFØCCL, ADØSN, NØDRX & NØDSH, and AAØU.

There were 1025 SSB contacts logged on 20, 40, and 80 meters; 488 FT8 contacts spread across 15, 20, 40, and 80 meters (KEØN logged the majority of the FT8 contacts while operating all 30 hours of the announced operating schedule) and CW contacts on 20 and 40 meters, thanks to N5LB. Peak times of operation were 1:00 to 4:00 PM on 40 meters, and 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on 20 meters.

So far we have received requests for certificates for 310 QSOs, some of which were for multiple QSOs by the same operator, so the number of certificates sent will be less. Last year we sent out 190 certificates.

Based upon the success of distributed operation for the Remembering the Edmund Fitzgerald and Ice-olation Station WØJH, we are going to develop a hybrid approach for SARA special events when we can return to in-person operations – hopefully this November for the 19th Annual Remembering the Edmund Fitzgerald Special Event.

General Class License online classes are in progress.

Online classes (via WEBEX) for the General Class license, began Wednesday January 27. If you are interested in upgrading your license, or you know of someone that would be interested: this is the class for you. The class will use the ARRL General Class License Manual 9th Edition as the study guide. The study guide may be purchased online at the arrl.org or from Amazon. The sessions will be recorded and will be available for viewing on the SARA YouTube channel in the near future.

This week’s SARA activities

SARA’s on-air and virtual activities are a great way to stay connected with others. These activities provide healthy social contact while maintaining personal distancing. A reminder that SARA activities refrain from discussions of political, religious, racial, or other inappropriate topics. We are a multi-cultural, multi-generational association with a shared interest in amateur radio – let’s be sure to keep it that way.
