SARA will participate in the annual ARRL Field Day Saturday June 22 and Sunday June 23. Our Field Day site will be at Valley View Park, 5421 N Osgood Ave, Oak Park Heights, MN 55082. Permits have been secured and the game is afoot for a fun and successful Field Day. Co-chairs Ray KFØEKD and Tim KFØJEL have been leading the team with site pre-planning, food and beverage plan, on-site networking of computers, antenna testing, and other tasks.

We have an on-site Field Day Planning Session scheduled for Thursday June 6 when Radios in the Parks visit Valley View Park. Interested in lending a helping hand, contact Ray KFØEKD at speltzraymond at gmail dot com or Tim KFØJEL at timgrotheer at gmail dot com.

MN POTA Day 2024

Minnesota Parks on the Air Day is Saturday June 8, 2024, from 10:00 AM (15:00 UTC) to 6:00 PM CDT (22:00 UTC). Details can be found at This is a free admission day to MN State Parks.

Activators can register their planned activation(s) and indicate if they are willing to mentor others interested in POTA activating, co-operate, demonstrate, or welcome visitors to their activation.

Activators: we recommend taking some time at the top of the hour to work “local” stations on 40 meters and 80/75 meters. You can grab the MN POTA park-to-parks as well as give the MN/ND/SD/IA/WI/Manitoba/Ontario hunters a chance to work you. Be sure to spot your activation on spots page.

A MN POTA Facebook page has been established for information on MN POTA Day and the MN POTA Meetup on August 10 at Wild River State Park.

MN POTA Day builds upon SARA’s POTA Activity Day the previous 2 years. The SARA POTA Activity Day will continue on the same day with a similar schedule as in previous years: 2nd Saturday Breakfast, day of operating in the parks, and dinner to follow at Acapulco in Stillwater at 6:00 PM

This year, we will have what we are calling a 5-park Rover Sprint and Poker Run. 5 experienced POTA activators have volunteered to host a POTA station, each at a different POTA park location. You will be able to achieve a 5-park POTA Rover “Warthog” award by activating (at least 10 contacts) from each of the parks. Each station will have a unique callsign to identify them. As a bonus for SARA members, you will be able to draw a playing card at each park after completing your activation. Complete the 5-card hand by activating at each site. Best poker hand will win a special prize (donated by Buck KA9CWM and Mickey WD9GYT) at the dinner gathering that evening.

Here are the 5 park station locations:

  • WØJH           Afton State Park US-2466
    • station host WØOXB
  • 1×1 call TBA Croix Savanna Scenic & Natural Area US-10725
    • station host Collin KEØIYN
  • 1×1 call TBA Croix National & Scenic River US-0673 at the St Croix Boom Site on Highway 95 north of Stillwater

  • 1×1 call TBA Browns Creek State Trail US-9386 at the Browns Creek Park 8312 Neal Ave N, Stillwater
    • Station host KCØOIO
  • 1×1 call TBA Gateway Overview State Trail US-9387 at Rotary Park Trailside North St Paul Dr & 2nd St N in North St Paul
    • Station host KØAIF

This will be a fun day for all!

Amateur Radio Operators Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day

On June 6th, 2024, the South East Metro Amateur Radio Club (SEMARC) will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. The FCC has approved a special callsign for this radio event, W2W. During the event, club members will attempt to contact as many amateur radio operators across the U.S. and other countries to recognize and remember the contributions of U. S .and other allied troops involved in the operation.

On June 6, 1944 troops from the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and other allies landed 156,000 soldiers on the beaches of Normandy. It was the largest invasion of that time and within a few days, 360,000 troops, 50,000 vehicles and 100,000 tons of equipment had landed. By August, 1944, all of northern France had been liberated and, in the spring of 1945, the Allies had defeated the Germans. During this event, we remember the bravery and service of those soldiers, sailors and airmen. The event will take place at Cottage Grove Station #3, which is located at 7500 Langley Ave S. in Cottage Grove, MN. Veterans and members of the public are welcome to visit. Hours of operation will be from 10:00AM until 5:00 PM.

SEMARC thanks the City of Cottage Grove and its Fire Department for allowing us access to and use of the station for this event.
